Writing poetry for me has always been less about crafting perfect lines and more about opening a quiet space within-a place where memory, feeling, and faith intertwine. When I sit down with a blank page, I'm not just arranging words; I'm tracing the contours of lived experience, listening to the subtle rhythms of heartache and hope that pulse beneath everyday moments. This creative journey unfolds slowly, shaped by deep reflection and an honest reckoning with what it means to love, to lose, and to believe.

The process is intimate and sometimes fragile, like holding a small flame against the wind. It requires patience to wait for those first fragile sparks of inspiration and courage to follow them wherever they lead. Here, authenticity is the foundation-each poem emerges from a place of truth, not polished or simplified but raw and real. Sharing this behind-the-scenes glimpse invites you into the quiet labor and gentle persistence that shaped my debut collection, Matters of the Heart, and the many layers that bring poetry from a whispered thought to a book that holds a world.

Stepping Into My Quiet Room

I am Harry Marcena, an independent Brooklyn poet and the person behind Beacon of Verse. My first book, Matters of the Heart: Poems of Perspectives Vol. 1, illustrated with quiet grace by Vani M. Sieunarine, began in a small room with a blank notebook.

The notebook lay open on my desk, its pages pale and waiting. Outside the window, streetlights washed the sidewalk in soft orange. A bus sighed at the corner. Somewhere between that still desk and the restless city, a single line arrived. Sometimes it came while I stood on a crowded train, hand on the rail, trying to hold a phrase steady in my mind until I could write it down.

This collection gathers poems about love and faith, grief and the slow work of renewal. It is my first time stepping into poetry publishing on my own, and I am still learning my way. I want to show how those scattered lines grew into a finished poetry book someone can hold and buy, and I invite you to sit with me as I walk through that quiet, honest work.

Finding Inspiration: The Heartbeat Of My Poems

Inspiration rarely arrives as a lightning bolt for me; it more often slips in through the small cracks of an ordinary day. A half-heard argument on the sidewalk, a child's laughter rising over traffic, a quiet prayer whispered before sleep. These fragments stay with me, tugging at my thoughts until they begin to form a line, then a rhythm, then the bones of a poem.

Matters of the Heart began with moments when my chest felt tight, not from illness, but from emotion I had not yet named. An unanswered message. A lingering hug. A silence at the dinner table that spoke louder than any shouted word. I carried those scenes for a while, replaying them as I washed dishes or waited at a crosswalk, asking myself what they revealed about love, fear, pride, or hope.

My faith also shapes the first spark of many pieces. Sometimes it is a question I bring to God and do not hear an answer to right away. Other times it is a line from a song or a verse that catches on a certain word and refuses to let go. I sit with that word, roll it around in my thoughts, and notice where it touches my own history of doubt, trust, and surrender. When that inner echo grows strong enough, I know it is asking to be written.

Relationships give my poems their faces and voices. I think of the people I have loved, disappointed, forgiven, or lost. Instead of describing them directly, I return to a small gesture: the way a hand pulled away, the way eyes brightened at unexpected kindness. I focus on these details until a feeling rises that feels honest, even if it is painful. That feeling becomes the heartbeat of a draft.

Emotional transitions often leave traces that turn into lines. Standing at the edge of a new beginning, or sitting in the aftermath of an ending, I notice how my body reacts: restless fingers, shallow breath, heavy shoulders. I pay attention to those signals and ask what they are trying to say before any neat story appears. The poem usually starts in that raw, unfinished place, before I have decided what the moment should mean.

Everyday life and internal reflection meet when I give myself time to be quiet after a charged moment. I might replay a conversation word by word, then step back and listen for what stayed unsaid. I ask: What did my heart want but never voice? Where did faith steady me, and where did it tremble? When I can answer in images instead of explanations, the first lines begin to surface. From there, the movement from spark to sentence starts, and inspiration slowly turns into words on the page.

Drafting And Shaping: Breathing Life Into Poems

Once the first line lands on the page, the quiet work begins. I rarely write a poem straight through. Instead, I circle it. I place the original line at the top of a fresh page, then write underneath it in loose fragments, leaving wide margins and room to make a mess. I copy the line again by hand, sometimes three or four times, to feel its rhythm in my wrist as well as in my ear.

The creative process of writing poetry, at least for me, starts as a kind of listening. I listen to where the breath falls short, where a word feels stiff in my mouth, where a phrase pulls the poem toward honesty or hides from it. I break lines in different spots, stack the same sentence in two shapes, and read both versions aloud. If my tongue trips, or my chest feels closed, I know the poem is not breathing yet.

Form often reveals itself slowly. Some pieces in Matters of the Heart began as long, unbroken blocks of text. On the second or third draft, I noticed that the feeling of the poem slowed in the middle, like a held breath during an argument. I cut the stanza there, left a clean space, and the pause on the page started to mirror the pause in the memory. At other times, a short, sharp pattern fit better, like the clipped thoughts that race through the mind after a painful goodbye.

Editing is where emotional honesty is tested. A first draft often tries to sound wise too quickly. On later passes, I cross out the neat conclusion and ask myself what I was afraid to admit. Was I angry, not just hurt? Was I proud when I said I had forgiven? Poems about love and faith only ring true for me when I stop polishing my feelings into something tidy and instead name them as they arrived: confused, stubborn, hopeful, ashamed, relieved.

Some drafts sit untouched for weeks. I come back with fresh eyes and read them aloud as if someone else wrote them. If a line about healing feels like advice rather than confession, I know I have stepped away from the real wound. I try to return to a specific image: the unreturned call, the hospital corridor, the empty side of the bed. From there, I trim anything that drifts into sermon or performance.

This patient reshaping is part of the creative labor behind poetry books that focus on love, faith, and healing. Each poem passes through many quiet versions, gaining and losing lines, until the core feeling stands clear enough to carry its own weight. Only then do the pieces start to speak to one another and hint at a collection, a poetry book that feels like a single, steady heart, rather than scattered pages.

Bringing The Collection Together

The moment individual poems start to echo each other, I feel a shift. The work is no longer only about shaping single pieces; it becomes about listening for a larger voice that might carry across the whole book. With Matters of the Heart, that voice grew slowly, one draft at a time, until I began to hear a pattern of questions: Who am I when love breaks down, when faith wavers, when something new asks to begin.

I spread printed poems across my desk and the floor, like scattered photographs. I read them in different orders, noticing how one ending brushed against the next opening. A poem about heartbreak beside a poem about answered prayer felt false, like skipping the hard middle. Placing a piece about numbness after a raw confession dulled both. I wanted the collection to read as an honest author's journey writing poetry through tangled seasons, not as a highlight reel.

Gradually, three threads surfaced: resilience, identity, and new beginnings. Poems where the speaker stands back up after disappointment gathered in one loose arc. Pieces that wrestled with self-worth, ego, and the masks I wear formed another. The quieter, hopeful texts that look toward fresh starts settled near the end. I did not label these sections on the page, but I let them guide the sequence so the book could move from fracture to self-recognition to a cautious kind of hope.

Design choices followed the same intention. I left breathing space between certain poems so heavy themes had room to settle before the next page turned. The illustrations by Vani M. Sieunarine sit where the emotional current deepens, like small windows that open the feeling instead of explaining it. I wanted the poetry reading experience to feel like walking a single winding path, not crossing a crowded street of unrelated voices.

The challenge in creating a themed poetry book was not sorting by topic but staying honest about movement. Healing is not a straight line; neither is faith. I arranged the pieces so returns, setbacks, and doubts remained visible. By the time the last poem arrives, the heart in these pages is still tender, still asking questions, yet standing in a new light. That shape, more than any single poem, is what makes Matters of the Heart feel like one complete work.

Navigating Independent Poetry Publishing

Once the poems and the order felt settled, my attention shifted from quiet drafting to the practical side of writing and publishing poetry independently. I opened a fresh document, not for new lines, but to shape the book itself. Margins, typeface, line spacing, page breaks—each choice needed to respect the breath of the poems while still working on a physical page.

I printed test pages and laid them beside the earlier handwritten drafts. Some pieces looked cramped when the lines pressed too close together, so I widened the spacing. Others felt scattered with too much white, so I drew them in. I checked where a poem ended on the page; if the last line slipped alone onto the next sheet, I shifted the layout so the poem could stay together, like a single held thought.

Working with Vani M. Sieunarine on the illustrations deepened this stage. I shared the finished sequence and the emotional peaks, then listened as she responded with images. When her sketches arrived, I sat with each one beside the poem it might accompany. If an illustration amplified the feeling rather than repeating it, I knew it belonged there. I wanted the drawings to feel like pauses of reflection, not decoration.

The poetry book publishing process as an independent author also meant learning the technical steps piece by piece. I prepared separate files for print and digital formats, checking that line breaks survived the shift from screen to paper. Page numbers, contents list, title page, acknowledgments—each small element asked for attention so the reader could move smoothly through Matters of the Heart without stumbling over layout.

Setting up online distribution felt like opening the window wider. From my desk in Brooklyn, I uploaded the final files, filled in descriptions, chose categories, and waited while the system processed my work. Watching a simple product page appear for a poetry book that once lived only in my notebook was both strange and grounding.

The first time I saw that someone on another continent could buy poetry books I had written in the quiet of my room, a different kind of stillness settled over me. Independent poetry publishing carries its own weight: there is no distance between my name and each decision. Yet that same nearness brings a quiet fulfillment. The long hours of drafting, arranging, formatting, and checking become part of a single gesture: sending Matters of the Heart out into the world, one reader at a time.

Reflection On My Author's Journey

When I look back to that first blank notebook and then hold the finished copy of Matters of the Heart: Poems of Perspectives Vol. 1, I see more than pages. I see a long line of evenings spent wrestling with single words, quiet mornings spent reading drafts aloud, and the still ache that pushed each poem into being. The poetry book development steps blurred into something deeper: a slow reshaping of how I see myself.

I entered this work as someone who scribbled lines in the margins of ordinary days. Through the patience of drafting, arranging, and learning the poetry book publishing process on my own, I began to accept a new name for myself: poet. Not because I reached a certain milestone, but because I stayed with the questions long enough to give them language.

Building Beacon of Verse as an independent poetry publishing home widened that identity again. I am not only the person who writes the poems; I am also the one who chooses how they meet the world. Every choice, from font size to file format, taught me that care on the page is part of care for the reader. The work did not end when the last poem was revised; it shifted into another kind of attention.

Publishing Matters of the Heart changed me less by success or numbers and more by the quiet knowledge that my inner life now sits bound as a poetry book someone can open. That thought humbles me. It also keeps me listening. The questions that shaped this collection have not gone silent. Love still surprises and disappoints me. Faith still steadies and unsettles me. New beginnings still arrive before I feel ready.

I expect my next works to grow from those same honest tensions, though I do not know yet what form they will take. For now, I offer this first book as a record of one stretch of road. If the poems about love and faith in Matters of the Heart meet you in a familiar ache or a fresh hope, I am grateful. Beacon of Verse exists so I can continue to share that kind of intimate, reflective writing and keep a space open for those who want to follow future releases, read new poems, or quietly walk alongside this unfolding author's journey.

Closing Thoughts: Embracing The Creative Path

As I sit with Matters of the Heart beside that first blank notebook in my memory, one lesson stands out: poetry asks for patience. Lines arrive in their own time, and the work is to keep showing up with an honest heart, even when the page stays quiet.

Writing and publishing this poetry collection required steady self-examination. I had to face what I wanted to hide, admit where I was still wounded, and trust that careful revision would carry those truths without softening them into comfort alone.

Independent poetry publishing turns that inner work outward, yet the center remains the same: a private, persistent listening. If you sense that in these pages, I hope it reminds you that every finished poetry book rests on unseen hours of reflection, and that poetry can stand beside you through grief, faith, doubt, and the slow return of hope.

Late nights at my desk, the soft glow of a lamp casting shadows over scattered drafts, and the faint aroma of coffee lingering on stained pages-these small moments shaped the journey of bringing Matters of the Heart: Poems of Perspectives Vol. 1 into being. I remember exchanging thoughtful emails with Vani M. Sieunarine, pondering how her delicate illustrations might mirror the quiet pulse of a single line or the stillness between verses. Each choice, each pause, was made with the hope that these poems might sit gently beside you in your own moments of love, loss, faith, and healing.

Writing and reading poetry about such tender themes can feel vulnerable, like opening a door to parts of ourselves we often keep hidden. I want you to know your own unfinished stories are welcome here-this collection exists as a companion for those times when words falter but the heart keeps asking questions. As a Brooklyn poet and independent publisher, I crafted this book not just as a finished work, but as an invitation to linger a little longer with your feelings.

If you find yourself curious about the process of poetry publishing, wish to host a poetry reading, or simply seek guidance on where to begin writing or reading more deeply, please feel free to reach out. I am here on the other side of the page, ready to listen and share what I have learned. Together, we can keep the conversation going, one quiet line at a time.
